On September 17th, I hosted a tour of downtown and various nearby neighborhoods for a possible jumpstart of a well known N.E. Ohio Vegetarian/Vegan cafe. My guests were owners Michelle and John Barett, proprietors of The Flaming Ice Cube Cafe out east in neighboring Youngstown.
Their establishment is quite unique, original and very eclectic—and the food appeals to all palettes. There is a adjoining retail store on their cafe that sells many unique gift items and health products which are not usually available in mainstream stores. I thought downtown lacks this particular element and yet felt that there would be much support for it.
After the tour, John and Michelle were interested in their options here, were impressed by the local, independent and historical feel of the downtown and adjacent neighborhoods–and felt it would be a perfect setting for their business.
One stop during the day included a visit with fellow advocate Jesse Howells at the Park Building on Public Square. After Jesse gave a brief tour of The Park Building and its street level business opportunities, both he, John and Michelle had the opportunity to brainstorm about the ideas of selecting this spot as a potential location.
At the end of the day, much interest has been inspired in the owners of The Flaming Ice Cube to establish a smaller scale of their venue downtown. I will do all I can to help this become a reality by offering the Baretts all they need to help get this off and running Cleveland. Additionally, thanks to Jesse for his input and advocacy and support for this idea!
